ABSTRACT

Objectives: To presented the experience at the National Cancer Institute of Mexico City in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with primary bladder adenocarcinoma
Material and methods: Retrospective study of 20 years, 1984-2004, of patients with diagnosis of primary bladder adenocarcinoma, excluded all patients with urachal carcinoma and metastatic bladder adenocarcinoma. We used descriptive statistic method for the data analysis.
Results: Of 29 patients with bladder adenocarcinoma, only 17 had the diagnosis of primary bladder adenocarcinoma, 11 men and 6 women, with a mean age of 54 years. The principal risk factor was the tobacco use in 23.5%, the principal symptom was gross hematuria in 64.7%, and the time of evolution was of 9 months. The diagnosis was made with cystoscopy and cold bladder biopsy in 47%, the most common location was the side bladder walls in 53%. 70% of the patients presented with metastases at diagnosis, and 70% the surgery could not be made for the great tumor activity. Finally 47% died in a period of 6 months.
Conclusions: Primary bladder adenocarcinoma is a rare tumor in the National Cancer Institute, we had a great incidence in the male patients; our patients presented with advanced disease at the diagnosis, usually were tumors with an aggressive behavior, with a great mortality usually in 6 months independent of the treatment; so we can’t give guides in the treatment of this patients for their rare incidence.
