ABSTRACT

Integration of leadership and administration is crucial to successful management of organizations. This makes it necessary to analyze administration and leadership styles present in a specific and most relevant class of organizations, general hospitals. Leadership styles as performed by nursing executives in Mexico City general hospitals were identified, and the relationship of these with development of their collaborators, according to the situational leadership model of Hersey and Blanchard. The results of this study showed the rutinary and bureaucratic orientation of hospitals, and found four leadership styles (directing, coaching, supporting and delegating) , four types of attitudes in nursing personnel (inactive, reactive, proactive and interactive) and type A behavioural characteristics of the directive personnel. The most significant relationship found was between persuasive leadership and reactive attitude of the nursing personnel.
