ABSTRACT

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of infections of the lower airways such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under 36 months. The General Hospital has no laboratory test for specific diagnosis, studies, data or frequency.
Objective: To determine the number of patients and seasonal morbidity of RSV in children under 36 months with lower respiratory tract infection in the General Hospital of Chihuahua.
Methods: We performed a prospective cross-sectional study during the month of August 2008 to July 2009, which included all children under 36 months of age with a diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infection, had made a rapid test for RSV using the EZ RSV test (Becton Dickinson Laboratory).
Results: We admitted a total of 52 patients, of which, 35% (n=18) were positive for RSV, 72% (n=13) of them were males, the highest percentage 89% (n=16) were found in children under the age of 12 months that were infected with the virus. Prematurity was the major important antecedent in patients positive for RSV. The highest incidence was observed between the months of November and April.
Conclusions: RSV is a major cause of infections of the lower airways in children under the age of 12 months. Therefore it is important to have the lab test to facilitate early diagnosis.
