Silver sulfadiazine creame versus topical application in second degree burns

ABSTRACT
Objective. To compare the effectiveness of silver sulfadiazine in topical suspension (suspension) against silver sulfadiazine 1% cream (cream) to prevent infections in patients with second degree burns.Material and methods. Patients were randomized to one of two groups of treatment, cream or suspension, the drug was applied daily along 30 days, patients were clinically evaluated at the beginning and regular periods, symptoms evaluated were pain, burning sensation, pruritus, edema and local infection.
Results. We do not find infections our patients along the course of the study, pain disappear at day 15, burning sensation disappeared at day 5 in 70% of the cream group against a 63.0% in the suspension group (p = 0.574); and the patients were without burning sensation at day 15. One patient with suspension presented hyperpigmentation and scar formation at day 10.
Conclusions. Silver sulfadiazine suspension at 1% and silver sulfadiazine 1% cream are effective in the management of second degree burns superficial and deep, both treatments were safe.
