ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the profile of the primary caregiver of the geriatric patient and to relate caregiver burden with the quality of life.
Participants and method: Analytical cross-sectional study in primary caregivers of clinic Dr. Ignacio Chávez who accepted to participate in the study. The Zarit scale was used for caregiver's burden and the Nottingham Health Profile for quality of life. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to examine the relationships among demographic and health variables, and the characteristics of the activity with the caregiver's burden. The level of significance for all the statistical analyses was 0.05, using the statistical program SPSS version 15.
Results: 100 caregivers were included in the study, 11% men and 89% women with an average age of 52.9 years; 26% of them were professionals, and 27% suffered arterial hypertension and 18% diabetes mellitus. According to the Zarit scale, 14% of the caregivers referred light burden and 11% intense burden. Relation to statistical significance was obtained between caregiver's burden and educational level, arterial hypertension and relationship, as well as with all the dimensions of quality of life.
Conclusion: Being caregiver affects the quality of life.
