ABSTRACT

Polypharmacy is defined as the use of multiple pharmacological preparations prescribed by a doctor or not, has been, along with delirium, dementia, falls, immobility and incontinence, one of the great challenges of geriatrics. Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with the use of polypharmacy in patients over 65 admitted to the Emergency Room of HGR 25. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional observational, descriptive, analytical, a survey was conducted during the month of October 2010 to identify the frequency and factors related to polypharmacy in patients admitted to Emergency Department. Results: 150 patients. Met criteria for polypharmacy 100 patients (66.7%), 82.7% were hypertensive, 50.7% were diabetic. Polypathies had 36%, 28.7% self-medication being given medication more guards on the gastric mucosa, most commonly used NSAIDs and the cardiovascular effect. Conclusions: The elderly population is most susceptible to polypharmacy. The most common medications are NSAIDs self-medicate. It will be necessary to establish adequate preventive measures to limit the development of polypharmacy and medication.
