ABSTRACT

Background: It is imperative to develop an objective exam that allows us to identify if a surgeon is really apt to operate. The purpose of this study was to apply an objective assessment of surgical skills using non-living anatomical models.
Methods: This was a two-stage study: written exam (stage I), and; oral exam and an objective structured assessment of technical skills (OSATS). The assessment involved 7 skill stations and a global rating scale to indicate correctly performed or not and a fail/pass exam, respectively.
Results: The exam was applied to all surgeons who approved the written exam. We found no statistical difference among skills in open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and instrument identification. There was a statistically significant difference (p ‹ 0.001) when median values were compared between laparoscopic surgery vs open surgery and the identification of surgical instruments. Theoretical knowledge and surgical skills have a positive correlation.
Conclusion: This assessment proves to be valid and reliable to evaluate surgical dexterity.
