ABSTRACT

Cervical cancer is one of the main health problems around the world, especially in developing countries. Human papillomavirus is necessary for the development of cervical cancer, producing the precancerous lesions that can be detected by screening. With the introduction of screening programmes using cytology, developed countries were able to substantially reduce the incidence and mortality from this disease, but not the developing countries, where the screening programmes have faced important limitations. Despite of the achievements made with the cytology, it has significant restrictions that have motivated the investigation of new forms of screening that are already being used primarily in developed countries. Based on the experience of countries with more economic resources, measures for establishing successful programmes in the regions most affected by the disease should be taken.
