ABSTRACT

Central Pontine Myelinolysis is a rare demyelinating disease, which affects the central pons. Extrapontine myelinolysis affects other parts of central nervous system. Central pontine myelinolysis is seen mostly in patients with chronic alcoholism or chronic diseases accompanied by malnutrition or electrolyte imbalances. The most common cause is the treatment of hyponatremia, when sodium levels rise too fast. Definitive diagnosis of this entity is pathological. Brain tomography may be normal or hypodense alterations, magnetic resonance is more sensitive and specific to confirm the diagnosis. We report the case of a 47-year-old man with a history of chronic alcoholism, with important electrolyte disorder, who on the basis of clinical and imaging findings on tomography is diagnosed central pontine myelinolysis.
