ABSTRACT
Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is an innovative surgical procedure for treating morbid obesity.
Method: We reviewed the records of patients with sleeve gastrectomy in the period August 2009 to April 2010, and telephone interview was done to those who did not attend their appointment at 6 months postoperatively for questioning about their weight and comorbidities. Two cohorts were formed by classifying patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m
2 and under 50 kg/m
2 for analysis by Student t test.
Results: 21 patients were operated on by laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, 47.6% men and 52.4% female, mean age was 36.8 ± 10.9 years. Obese (BMI ‹ 50 kg/m
2) were 61.9% and the super-obese (BMI ≥ 50 kg/m
2) 38.1%. The operative time for obese was 125 ± 17.7 minutes and 139.2 ± 33.1 for super-obese, there was only one complication of postoperative bleeding, did not become to open any procedure and the overall mortality was 0%. The %EWL was 43.31% for obese and 39.46% for the super-obese.
Conclusions: Sleeve gastrectomy can be performed safely in patients with super-obesity.
