Cognitive behavioral group theraphy in depressedmothers of children with cerebral palsy in rehabilitation

ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral group therapy. Design: Study quasi-experimental, unblinded, analytic. Method: With signature of informed consent to mothers of patients from 2 to 4 years old with severe cerebral palsy at Centro de Rehabilitación Infantil Teletón Occidente, it was evaluated their state of depression with Beck scale, and it was applied cognitive behavioral group therapy of 8 sessions and measured after it. It was used statistical analysis with Student’s t and Wilcoxon. Results: Participated 27 mothers, average age 30 years (19-41), with depressive symptoms in 92.6%. The 22.2% had severe depression, 51.8% moderate, 18.5% slight depression and 7.4% minimal. It was modified in a significant way after the treatment as only 12% (p ‹ .001) presented any symptom of depression. The 88% (p ‹ .001) remained with minimal or normal depression and 4% (p ‹ .001) slight, moderate and severe each one. Conclusion: The cognitive behavioral group therapy is highly recommended due to its effectiveness facilitating the utilization of social and personal resources with the creation of new support networks for the caregivers.
