ABSTRACT

Genital tuberculosis is considered an unusual disease in our country. Mainly, we are dealing with post-primary forms, usually asymptomatic. Before the appearance of tuberculostatics, the most frequent and serious form of disease was peritoneal tuberculosis. The expectations during the eighties about pulmonary tuberculosis and extra pulmonary forms were mostly concerned with a progressive reduction on the incidences, to reach a disease control. However, the tuberculosis rates in Mexico are currently high, mostly due to the enormous reservoir in the general population (people infected but lacking treatment), and the marginal population (baciliferous patients with no possibility of registration or being part of contact studies). The increasing incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis can explain the increase of extra pulmonary forms, such as urogenital disease.
