ABSTRACT
It is known that stroke is a desease of the elderly, never the less it also occurs in children and young adults. Within each age group, stroke occurs more frequently in men. Stroke is a major health problem for women; strokes kill twice as many women in the United States of America (USA) as does breast cancer. Overall, more women than men that die in the USA, because of stroke. Currently, stroke affects aproximately 750,000 Americans every year, and similar or higher rates are noted in most other parts of the world. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in United States, and is the second most common cause of death in the world. Stroke is likely to increase because life expectancy is increasing, this means that population with high risk of stroke will augment. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and long term institutionalized care. This illness is second to Alzheimer’s disease as a cause of dementia. Expenses in both health care and the losses in productivity representing important economical losses. These costs tend to increase exponentialy when stroke occurs in young adults. The impact of stroke in young women affects not only the patient, but the whole family, comunity and our society. These young patients get to live more than 2/3 of their lives with mayor disabilitys, incapable of taking care of their loved ones, sometimes they can not even take care of themselves, impacting psicologically on them. This article presents two cases of stroke in young women, focusing on the specific risk factors for this particular population.REFERENCES
