ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to study the prevalence and characteristics of diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients referred to the ophthalmology clinic of a second level clinic of the Costa Rican Social Security. 1314 diabetics type 2 were examined, with an average age of 61.7 years of age. Of these, 61.8% were female and 38.2% were male. Duration of diabetes was 7.9 years on average. Prevalence of DR was 16,4% (299 patients); where 7,1% had mild DR, moderate DR 6,1% and severe DR 2,1%. Proliferative DR accounted for a 1,9%, and 2.1% of patients had macular edema. Diabetics with more than 10 years of disease presented retinopathy in 81.6%, and 68.5% had hypertension and 54.8% dyslipidemia. An 8.5% presented cataracts, and 6.0% had glaucoma, whereas 65,1 % had a register of glycosylated hemoglobin on the six months prior to the evaluation.
