ABSTRACT

Introduction: This study evaluates the influence of the laughter therapy as a therapeutic alternative to support children with cancer; this technique provides many benefits in the organism, it diminishes pain, it doesn’t have side effects and it is inexpensive. Objective: Analyze if the effects of laughter therapy help to control pain in children that are taking Chemotherapy treatment. Material and methods: An experimental study was performed in an open group. A document for data collection was employed and it was included the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to assess pain and a section to register the four sessions of laughter therapy. Thirty five children participated in this research; they were taking Chemotherapy treatment in the Hemato-Oncology Service. Parents were trained to perform the assessment of pain pre, trans and post implementation of Chemotherapy: the researches applied the technique of laughter therapy. Results: Thirty-five patients participated in the study, there were seventeen men and eighteen women. The age range is among three and fifteen years; the most frequent diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The results obtained in the Visual Analog Scales of Wong-Baker showed decreased pain in all patients after laughter therapy sessions at an average of three points. Conclusions: We consider that the laughter therapy is a technique that can be useful to reduce pain in children diagnosed with Cancer because of its effectiveness.
