ABSTRACT
Throughout history, severely structurally compromised teeth have been restored using a range of materials and methods, the primary choice amongst these being intraradicular pins or posts affixed to the dentin tissue by means of some form of adhesive material. It is important to stress that individual cases require distinct techniques or methods, hence dentists need to study and select the appropriate technique and material for each. Fortunately for us, and thanks to the development of biomaterials, there are many new materials and methods available that can provide us with good longterm restoration.
Just as the materials used in posts have evolved, so too have luting materials, today the most common of these being glass ionomers, resins, and resin-modified glass ionomers.
With new developments in operational dentistry appearing practically every day, cementation procedures are of major importance due to the dramatic changes that have affected daily practice. This can be seen, for example, in the move away from the total-etch technique and in the rise of self-etching resin cement in adhesive techniques. This article describes new trends in intraradicular post cementation that use auto-adhesive resin cements that can be used with all types of post material, as well as with both direct and indirect posts. As an example, we will describe the cementation of glass fiber posts, the variety most commonly used today.
