ABSTRACT
Dental research has developed significantly throughout the world in recent decades. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze the scientific output of Mexican dentistry during the period from 2001 to 2008. Bibliometric methods were used to analyze the type and number of scientific articles published by Mexican dentists in indexed national and international journals.Publications were classified according to their subject and field of dental research.
Results showed that 717 papers were published: 637 (88.8%) in 42 national journals and 80 (11.2%) in 47 international journals; 548 (76.4%) were produced by dentists and postgraduate students at public universities and only 57 (7.9%) at private universities. The remainder, a total of 122 (15.7%), were published by dentists at health institutions and in private practice. Of the material studied, 18.4% were bibliographic reviews, 18.3% were epidemiological studies, and 17.6% were reports of clinical cases, which together represent over half of the publications (54.3%). Scientific papers regarded as producers of new knowledge accounted for 46.5%, and were related to the fields of basic sciences, epidemiology, clinical research, education, and social sciences applied to health.
It can be concluded that less than half of all publications contributed to the production of new knowledge. The field least studied was that of technological development (0.8%). Dental research in Mexico urgently requires a much-needed boost.
