ABSTRACT
Over the years, a wide range of filling materials have been used in primary teeth pulpotomy, each with particular features to ensure the success of the treatment concerned; these have included zinc oxide and eugenol, IRM, glass ionomer, and now MTA has shown itself to have excellent properties compared to other materials.
Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the clinical and radiological behavior of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) compared to intermediate restorative material (IRM) when used in pulpotomy treatment in the primary molars of patients attending a pediatric dental clinic at the School of Dentistry of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico between April 2010 and February 2011.
Materials and Methods: We selected 10 patients aged between 3 and 6 years with caries in their primary molars. Each underwent a pulpotomy using MTA and IRM. They were divided into two groups: Group 1, the control group using IRM in 11 molars and Group 2, using MTA in 12 molars. The patients were subjected to clinical and radiographic assessment after three and six months.
Results: Of the 10 patients included, one was withdrawn from the study for failing to attend control appointments. The final sample included 6 boys and 3 girls, with an average age of 4.3 years. The restored teeth were most frequently the first left and right upper molar with 6 temporary restorations each. On clinical examination, no signs or symptoms of disease were noted, and radiographic analysis revealed no signs of disease at three and six months.
Conclusion. Both materials proved to be a suitable choice for pulpotomy therapy and for maintaining the functionality of teeth until exfoliation. In clinical and radiographic terms, the treatment proved a success.
