ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, Minimal Invasive Dentistry has become one of the most important and fastest-growing fields in dentistry. This prevention-based approach has led to the reemergence of pit and fissure sealants, thanks to the introduction of bioactive materials. These sealants have proved useful not only in the prevention of demineralization but also in halting the progress of incipient lesions, whilst remineralizing the affected tissue.
Thanks to these properties, the new sealants can be used in adults, children and teenagers alike. Another advantage is that they can be applied to undetected demineralized tissue, which prevents the progress of caries that can harm the tooth. These glass ionomer sealants help remineralize damaged tissue as well as the surrounding structure. Furthermore, the fluoride they contain can be boosted by the fluoride and calcium phosphate in toothpastes and mouthwashes; this can help neutralize the pH of saliva and decrease the number of bacteria present in the mouth.
When these sealants are used as an alternative therapy, micro-conservative restorations are performed, which help preserve tooth structure and prevent unnecessary extractions. These restorations using minimal instrumentation serve a purpose that is both therapeutic and preventive..
