ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe the frequency of hypothermia and its complications in the pediatric patient under anesthetic procedures.
Material and methods. At the Hospital of Pediatrics of the National Medical Center Century XXI of the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Mexico City was performed the follow-up to a prospective cohort of the 01 March 2006 to 28 February 2007, prior approval of the Local Committee of Investigations, we included patients undergoing an anesthetic procedure in elective way of newborn infants up to 16 years of age, both gender, with ASA 2-4; everyone was administered general anesthesia; there was monitoring the vital signs during the procedure.
Results. Were analyzed 422 patients and were eliminated eight by incomplete data set. The age range was from 1 day to 16 years old, 167 (40%) were female; the presentation of hypothermia in general was 44%, complications were presented by 74% and the most frequent was slow anesthesic emersion (61%), followed by hypoglycemia.
Conclusions. When hypothermia occurs inadvertently, it may be associated to several medical complications. The continuous monitoring of the core temperature is mandatory for the timely and proper control of hypothermia. Finally make recommendations on the prevention and management.
