ABSTRACT

The gallstones (cholelithiasis) has a significant prevalence in the population of Western countries, 14.3% in Costa Rica, according to INEC. A study was conducted to describe the clinical presentation of the biliary colic, on the population of patients between 18 to 65 who attended at the Emergency Service of the San Vicente de Paul hospital. It was found that the age group between 50-57 years old was the most affected. Regarding genre, there was a relation of 3:1 (female:male) and most of them had abdominal pain, specifically in the right hyponchondrium, which was described by the cirugíapatients as moderate, they also mentioned vomiting as the main symptom. The patients with any complication presented, was documented Murphy as the most noticeable sign. The pa-thology of these patients, who had clinical characteristics of biliary colic, was confirmed by ultrasound. Also, semiology was very important when adequately approaching the patient in the emergency room to guide our diagnosis and be more efficient; it is fundamental to recognize the clinical characteristics of the entities wanted.
