ABSTRACT

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the intestinal tract. Its clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic cases detected accidentally in imaging studies to cases of gastrointestinal bleeding such as melena, rectal bleeding, among others. Immunohistochemical analysis plays an important role in the definitive diagnosis, allowing to differentiate morphologically similar injury as leiomyoma, leiomyoblastoma or leiomyosarcoma by inmunohistochemical markers. This review describes diagnostic aspects of GIST and their therapeutic.
