ABSTRACT

Background: Atherosclerosis is the only known vascular disease that is associated with coronary artery calcification. The quantification of coronary calcium allows an assessment of risk of adverse cardiovascular events. In 1990, a score was achieved by computed tomography. However, there are few studies that show the link between the amount of this mineral in the coronary arteries and the presence of significant stenosis. Objective: To determine the value of calcium score for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Methodology: An observational, analytical and cross section in 158 patients with suspected coronary artery disease and indication for invasive coronary angiography. Protocol was applied to quantify coronary calcium, using statistical significance tests to validate the use of this method for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. ROC curve was constructed as a general indicator of effectiveness. Results: The correlation between total calcium score and percent stenosis on angiography was considerable, with a Pearson coefficient of 0.392. The cutoff value of 40 Agatston units was the best sensitivity and specificity of 95% and 88% respectively. Conclusions: The calcium score showed good specificity and sensitivity for the detection of coronary artery disease, with a decent performance as a diagnostic.
