ABSTRACT
Introduction: The tracheal stenosis en pediatric patients is a serious pathology and requires a very specific treatment. Tracheoplasty is the best surgical procedure.Material and methods: We present our experience in surgical treatment for tracheal stenosis between January 1, 2001 and March 31 of 2011. It was analyzed the etiology, surgical procedure and its morbidity and mortality. We used descriptive statistic to present our results.
Results: In the analyzed period we treated 90 patients (60 male and 30 female), with a range age of two months and 17 years-old. The main presentation of tracheal stenosis was after endotracheal intubation. In 25 patients the treatment was tracheal dilatation, in other 25 laryngotracheoplasty and 40 patients tracheoplasty. Restenosis appeared in 52% of patients who received only tracheal dilatation and only occurred in three cases submitted to resection and anastomosis. Four patients died and two of them the death was not associated to surgical procedure. In long-term follow-up, the tracheal internal diameter improves to 80-90%.
Conclusion: It was concluded that tracheoplasty is useful and safe elective procedure for the treatment of the tracheal stenosis.
