ABSTRACT

Our objective was to assess the morbidity and mortality of rhino-orbitary mucormicosis. We evaluated 24 consecutive patients (38 - 65 years of age). All patients had a history of diabetes mellitus. Some also had a history of alcoholic liver disease, kidney disease, arterial hypertension, and arthritis. Clinical and radiologic evaluation showed necrosis and destruction; treatment was performed with amphotericin and surgery after mucormicosis was diagnosed. Although timely treatment was performed, we observed a mortality rate of 56%.
