ABSTRACT
It was designed an observational analytical case-control in order to identify variables
associated with the incidence of acute respiratory infections in children under five years. The
sample of these cases (179) was constituted by 5% of the cumulative incidence of acute
respiratory infections in children under 5 years during the first term in 2009 of doctors' offices
in Ciego de Avila to correspond them two controls (358). Data were obtained from an interview
with the mothers of the cases and controls. A bivariate analysis was carried out and it was
controlled for confounding factors using logistic regression dichotomous. Smoking habit during
pregnancy, low birth weight, asthma, congenital heart disease, parasitic diseases, high rates of
overcrowding and poor socioeconomic conditions showed significant association with acute
respiratory infection in the crude analysis. The final multivariate model identified the following
risk factors: personal medical history of parasitic disease, personal medical history of asthma,
more than 20 cigarettes smoked daily by mother and personal medical history of congenital
heart disease as the greatest risk excess awarded to this syndrome.
