ABSTRACT

A retrospective study was carried out at the Provincial Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola "from Ciego de Avila in order to understand the behavior of some epidemiological variables that influenced the appearance and development of infants of very low birth weight. The universe was composed of 96 children born very low birthweight from January 2006 to December 2010, with an incidence of 0.73%. As prenatal history excelled the hypertensive disease of pregnancy and premature membrane rupture. Survival was greater as increased weight to birth , length of gestation and Apgar score at 5th minute, as well as in cases where it used maturity lung inducers and those not requiring mechanical ventilation. The general survival was 66.6%. Early neonatal morbidity was represented by hyaline membrane disease, early onset sepsis and intraventricular hemorrhage, while the late acquired by sepsis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Sepsis was the main cause of death in the early and late neonatal period and posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus and bronchopulmonary dysplasia in the late infant period.
