Clinical and epidemiological behavior of primary open-angle glaucoma in relatives of glaucomatous patient.

ABSTRACT

An observational, descriptive, transversal study was carried out which 241 relatives of glaucomatous patients were examined to determine the clinical and epidemiological behavior of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in the period from January to December 2009. The sample consisted of 153 relatives, according to the criteria of inclusion, exclusion and study exit. They were subjected to an interrogation and ophthalmologic and physical examination. The glaucomatous group occupied the fifth part in the sample. Most affected patients were in their seventh decade of life, with a slight predominance of males and over half of them are not white. Brothers prevailed over parents and children. Nasal vascular rejection were the papillary changes that predominated between glaucomatous and papillary excavation less than 0.3 on suspects. Intraocular pressure remained within normal between suspects and elevated in glaucomatous. Almost all of the sample retained good visual acuity and taking into account campimetric alterations initials stood out among patients with glaucoma. More than half of glaucoma patients were in the incipient stage of the disease.
