ABSTRACT
Objective. Identify the relation between nutritional state and oral health condition in children ages four to six.Material and methods. Transversal study conducted in a population of 61 preschoolers. Nutritional status was determined, oral hygiene was evaluated using the Green and Vermillon index, and dental cavity degree was measured using the coe-d classification.
Results. Thirty three preschoolers 54% presented dental caries, with an average coe-d index of 2.73 and a predominantly regular dental hygiene, with no differences between sexes or age groups. The predominant nutritional groups were: healthy, mild and moderate malnutrition. Average coe-d was 1.47, 3.39 and 5.28, respectively. We found in average a good dental hygiene in healthy children and a bad one in malnourished ones. There was no prevalence of caries in children with obesity or overweight.
Conclusions. The degree of malnutrition showed a positive relation with both the caries prevalence and the cavity severity. In contrast, it established a negative relation with the level of oral hygiene.
