ABSTRACT
Laparoscopic ventral and incisional hernia has reported equivalent results, if not better, in comparison to the open approach in respect to recurrence, wound and general complications, hospital length of stay and postoperative pain. Since its first publication in 1990, it has experienced a diversity of developments regarding surgical technique, prosthetics and novel laparoscopic suturing and tacking devices. Paramount is the increasing stress toward the inclusion of muscle aponeurotic defect closure previous to the intraperitoneal prosthetic implant. This measure achieves a better anatomical and functional repair and diminishes the risks of seroma formation and recurrence. The present paper describes the technique stages, which at the present time we consider standardizable, also including a mention of the prosthetics, sutures, closure and tacking devices at hand, supported by the best scientific evidence available.
