ABSTRACT
Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) for the treatment of rectal lesions has a big importance and acceptance in our community, it is of great utility in elder or high risk surgical patients. Today we acknowledge its safety for rectal cancer treatment in early stages, its quickest recovery and less complications compared to abdominal surgery; TEM is also used for the treatment of benign pathology such as rectal polyps and stenosis. This system has no been used in developing countries because its elevated costs and the learning curve it requires. This paper shows a literature review about TEM, its indications, advantages, disadvantages, and new laparoscopic instrument alternatives to reduce surgical costs.
