ABSTRACT

Introduction: The purpose of this work is to present several cases with short length of stay in the hospital for open heart surgery. Material and method: Four patient, three pediatrics and one adult, programmed for open heart surgery were submitted to a short stay in the hospital for surgery. Two patients had subvalvular aortic stenosis, one patient presented an atrial septal defect, and the adult patient had ischemic heart disease. We measured the time from their admission to discharge from the hospital. Low dose of narcotics, early extubation, and mobilization was carried ont in all cases, and complications were analyzed. Results: Mean time of stay in the hospital was 86.5 ± 8.9 h and all patients were extubated between 7 and 10 h after surgical procedure. There were no deaths, perioperative complications, or readmission to the hospital. Discussion: It was concluded that in selected patients, if is feasible to decrease the stay at the hospital after open heart surgery.
