ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to present the incidence of two situs inversus at the Hospital Juárez of México in Mexico City, a tertiary level hospital. A complete review of the files from January 1993 to December 1998 in search of for situs inversus cases was carried out. From a total of 118,012 files, two situs inversus cases were found (0.001%). Of these cases, one (50%) was a masn, and one (50%), a woman. The average age was 42.5, (range 33-52 years). Both patients received surgical treatment, one for residual choledocolitiasis; the other was laparotomized due to portal hypertension and hypovolemic shock. We conclude that situs inversus is not diagnosed initially in approximately 45% of cases, the diagnosis only, come upon as an incidental discovery in the operating room (when necessary) or during imaging tests. Elsewhere, an appropriate clinical history with a meticulous physical examination is required to suspect the diagnosis; then, imaging studies may corroborate it (RX, USG and CAT) with the purpose of planning surgical strategy property. This planning will avoid complications during surgery.
