ABSTRACT

Objective: Our objective was quantification of frequency and severity of affective disorders in severely ill patients and detection by Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) personnel. Material and methods: We conducted a prospective, observational, transversal, homodemic study with prolective data-gathering. Patients admitted within 3 months were subjected to different instruments of psychiatric diagnosis and the response of treating physicians to the ailments detected was evaluated. Results: We included 46 ill patients in the study. Average anxiety score was 9 x 3.7, for depression, 6.9 x 3.6, and for delirium, 3.2 x 3.9. Only two patients were diagnosed with anxiety and one with delirium. Discussion: We analyzed treatment used in psychiatric disorders and concluded that treatment was not the most adequate. Documentation concerning psychiatric disorders was not found. We concluded that Critical Care Medicine specialists should improve their training in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric alterations.
