ABSTRACT

Trichomoniasis is a curable sexually transmitted disease caused by the unicellular parasite trichomonas vaginalis that generally affects women in childbearing years. Clinical manifestations can appear in anywhere on the genitourinary tract. In many cases women infected do not present symptoms, nevertheless, when there are manifestations of the disease, the patients may present fetid vaginal discharge, dysuria, dyspareunia, and vulva irritation. Complications of the disease are unusual, however, can result in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or infertility. The vaginal culture is regarded as the principal diagnostic method and the management generally consists in schemes of treatment with metronidazole or nitroimidazole derivatives always for oral, intravenous or topic administration depending on the clinical case, and the resistance or sensibility of the germen against the antibiotic.
