ABSTRACT

Recent researches have been done in the construction of instruments to measure burnout in specific professions. This paper presents the results of the elaboration of a Cuban version of the Questionnaire on Medical Professional Burnout (CDPM, its acronym in Spanish) by Moreno , Gálvez, Garrosa, and Mingote. This questionnaire consists of four scales which represent four components of the burnout process: Antecedents, Syndrome, Consequences and Modulators. Additionally were administered the Stress Symptomatology Inventory (ISE in Spanish), by Moreno , the Symptoms Check List Revised (SCL-90-R), by Leonard R. Derogatis and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) by Maslach and Jackson. All questionnaires were administered to 704 physicians from primary health care level of Havana City . Results present descriptive statistics of CDPM´s variables as well as Pearson's correlation coefficients among its scales. Obtained Cronbach´s Alpha Coefficients confirm the reliability of its scales (0,75; 0,82; 0,90 and 0,57, respectively) in general terms. An exploratory and a confirmatory factor analysis confirm the Syndrome scale´s structure. CDPM variables correlated in the expected direction and statistical signification with ISE, SCL-90-R and MBI questionnaires, what is interpreted as a concurrent validation of that scale. Reference data are presented in terms of the tertils of the scores of CDPM scales and Syndrome's components subscale. In conclusion, obtained results confirm the useful of CDPM as a valid and specific instrument for the evaluation of burnout in physicians.
