Child maltreatment from a legal perspective

ABSTRACT

A descriptive, transversal study was carried out from an approach or quantitative paradigm in order to determine the presence of Child Maltreatment and its impact from a legal point of view in families of the family doctor's office #8 of Marta Martínez Figuera Polyclinic, in Güines Municipality, Mayabeque Province, during the time period from June to December 2009. The sample consisted of 140 families that constitute 100% of the family nucleus of this office. The statistical analysis of percentages was performed using the contingency table through Docima X2. In cases where significant differences were reached, it was applied Duncan's docima for multiple comparisons. It was demonstrated the presence of child maltreatment in the studied families; being recognized as violence and crime, the most active forms of it (child sexual abuse, physical abuse and maltreatment by negligence or omission). The families surveyed have knowledge of the existence of codes or legal provisions that protect or defend children from the different forms of maltreatment, and they consider in the totality of their responses that abusing of a child it is against their normal development and appropriate formation.
