ABSTRACT

Introduction. Mouth disorders have a significant effect on the well-being of adults, the main diseases that afflict the latter being dental caries and periodontal disease. Together these two conditions account for a high percentage of tooth loss. Edentulism and the use of poorly adjusted dentures have been shown to have a negative impact on quality of life.
Objective. To determine the effect of using dental prostheses on the perceptions of oral health in a group of adults.
Materials and method. A non-experimental cross-sectional study of a group of adults who attended dental clinics for prosthesis placement. The WHO's clinical assessment of oral health was applied, and the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) taken, this being done twice, first prior to the placement of the prosthesis and then one month later.
Results. 53 subjects participated in the study, their average age being 67.23 years. Women displayed higher DMFT averages than men and a higher average in terms of missing teeth. The vast majority of patients (62.3%) were partially edentulous, and a further 35.8% totally edentulous. Based on the GOHAI, it was found that 11.3% had a positive perception of their oral health. A month after placement of the prostheses, 35.7% expressed a positive perception of their oral health. Chewing function, speaking, and concern over the state of one's teeth were the areas that showed a positive improvement over the two applications. There are statistically significant differences (p‹0.05) in the GOHAI scores between the two applications.
Conclusion. The negative effect on various aspects of the mouth functionality of adults that results from tooth loss can be diminished through the use of prostheses, which improves the user's self-perception of their oral health and, in turn, affects the overall quality of life of the population group in question.
