Fatty acids in colostrum and mature milk of mexican women

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to estimate the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3 and n-6 in clinically healthy women during the initial stage of lactation on the fifth day and the day 30 were obtained samples of colostrum and breast milk: following the criteria in the hospital. The results showed a decrease in the acids and tricosanoic lignoseric, linoleic acid increased to 30 days of lactation; in contrast, the arachidonic acids and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid declined. The alpha-linolenic acid in increase and the DHA decreased. There was an increase in the concentration of trans fatty acids, particularly the elaidic acid; with respect to the recommendations the contribution the daily intake of n-6 in the colostrum was only 50% and it came to more than 100% in the mature milk, in regard to the n-3 was less than 5% in the colostrum and less than 50% in mature milk thus it was noted a low consumption of foods rich in n-3 fatty acids and an increase in the consumption of n-6 fatty acids and trans during the first month of breastfeeding.
