ABSTRACT

Varicella – zoster virus is a herpesvirus that causes two distinct clinical syndromes. Primary infection is manifested as varicella (chickenpox), a contagious and usually benign illness that occurs in epidemics among susceptible children. Subsequent reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus in dorsal root ganglia results in localized cutaneous eruption termed: herpes zoster. (1 6 8) Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication in inmunocompetent patients. (6) The available therapies shown to be effective in managing neuropathic pain include anticonvulsivant drugs, tricyclic antidepressant drugs, opioids, topical lidocaine, and intrathecal methylprednisolone.
