ABSTRACT

Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of ocular morbidity. It is a chronic keratoconjunctivitis caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Represents 15% of blindness worldwide and is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Trachoma is endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Pacific Islander, and Aboriginal communities in Australia. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the ‘SAFE’ strategy: surgical, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvement.
