ABSTRACT

Introduction: the varicose ulcer is the most frequent disturbing and persisting complication of the varicose veins.
Objective: to describe the behaviour of the ulcers treated with laser of a lower power in patients carrying venous ulcers of the back limbs.
Methods: a descriptive study was developed analyzing 60 patients of both sexs, between 20 and 89 years old, having venous ulcers of the back limbs, who were assisted at the Service of Phlebo-Limphology of the National Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, for a period of two years. The following information was taking into consideration: general data, characteristics of the ulcers, their diameter, evolution time and the reaction to the treatment applied. All patients received 15 sessions of laser of lower power in the venous ulcers of the back limbs.
Results: the most frequent types of ulcers were post-thrombosis in 28 patientes (46,7 %) and the varicose in 22 (36,7 %). In more than 50 % of the cases the evolution time of the current ulcer was lower to one year of evolution. 67 % of the patients had total epitelization three weeks after the application of laser and a small group attained satisfactory results two weeks after the application.
Conclusion: the venous ulcers in lower extremity treat with laser of a lower power show satisfactory evolution in short time, it demonstrated the efficiency of this treatment.
