ABSTRACT

Objectives: to characterize the patients with varicose disease, who received foam sclerosis treatment, and to evaluate the treatment effectiveness and complications.
Methods: a descriptive study was carried out in 380 patients of both sexes, aged over 15 years, and carriers of varicose disease. All of them had been seen at the angiology service from January 2010 to May 2011 for foam sclerotherapy. A data base was created to include the following variables: age, sex, risk factors, and distribution of varicose veins according to classification, type of foam sclerotherapy according to distribution of varices, effectiveness and complication of the treatment.
Results: varicose disease was more frequent in females (58.1 %) and in the group between 15 and 59 years old (46 %). The more common risk factors were being female, age, standing position and osteoarticulary disorders. In some cases, according to the distribution of varicose veins -unilateral or bilateral- it was necessary to apply different sclerosing treatments. Pain and "mapping" (cutaneous pigmentation in the sclerosed varix path) were the more frequent manifestations related with the treatment. The complications were minimal in number.
Conclusions: Females are predominant in trh sample. The foam sclerotherapy prove to be effective due to few complications and the good evolution of most of patients since the beginning of treatment, so it offers rapid and lasting results.
