ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic surgery provides the possibility of performing two or more procedures in the same surgical act, including organs at a distance, in patients with concomitant diseases requiring surgical treatment. The objective of this article was to show the present state of the topic and some general considerations that we think must guide the use of this type of surgery. According to our own experience, it is feasible to perform laparoscopic surgery-associated procedures safely, effectively and usefully, whenever an appropriate indication warrants so, good preoperative assessment of the surgical risk is made, the medical team is well-experienced and certain technical guidelines are followed. If all this is accomplished, the associated procedures do not increase the conversion index, do not cause either additional operative morbidity or mortality. Therefore, we recommend the application of laparoscopic surgery in fully accredited services for this type of surgery.
