ABSTRACT

Introduction: preconceptional risk is conditioned by several factors, diseases and single or associated circumstances which can have unfavorable repercussions on the on mother-child binomial during pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium.
Objective: describe pre-conceptional risks in women between 12-49 years old, who are assisted in the Turagual practice, Motatán, in Trujillo, Venezuela, from january to july 2009.
Methods: 134 patients were the universe of this study. They were recorded to be in reproductive risk during the mentioned period. Out of them, 65 patients were the chosen sample. They were selected by the simple random method. For collecting their data, individual and family medical records were reviewed focused on variables as age, marital status, risk factors, and used contraceptive methods. Absolutes numbers and percentages for each variable were used as measure.
Results: the group age prevailing was between 35 and 49 years. Most of them were single. The most frequently risk factors found were sexual instability, arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Intrauterine devices and contraceptive pills were the most common contraceptive methods used.
Conclusions: the reproductive risk is associated with the vulnerability shown in some groups of persons in the community, so it is important to know this for the preventive work the doctor should carry out.
