ABSTRACT

Objective: To characterize the functional limitations of hearing in the state of Yucatán, México. Material and methods: We analyzed the data base in the SIEA-AYPRODA (Digital Records System in Audition from the Asociación Yucateca Pro Deficiente Auditivo) 2003-2011, which includes data from 1986 to 2011. We created a data base to classify hearing loss, based on criteria of magnitude and laterality were evaluated also the variables of gender, home town, access to healthcare. Results: Of the 2,285 people studied with different levels of hearing loss, the most common is the profound degree of left side in 28.7%. Conclusions: Yucatan is the federal entity with the highest prevalence of hearing impairment, as five of every thousand newborns in Yucatan are deafness in varying degrees, which is the figure of 189 cases per year, contrasted with nearly 3 persons per thousand inhabitants LFA in the country. The records of people with disabilities tend to underestimate the true prevalence of the problem.
