ABSTRACT

The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) is an international organization established to develop standards in cellular therapy and cord blood banking. FACT accredits bone marrow transplant centers, cellular therapy collection facilities, cellular therapy processing facilities and cord blood banks. FACT accredited organizations are located world-wide. On May 4, 2011 during the LII Congress of the Mexican Society of Hematology, FACT representatives conducted a workshop on the requirements for the accreditation of bone marrow transplant centers in Mexico. FACT has received a lot of interest in accreditation from Latin America and has expanded its educational training efforts to reach the cellular therapy transplant community. The purpose of the workshops and presentations are to provide participants with the history of FACT and the importance of accreditation in Latin America, an overview of the standards development process, preparation for accreditation, an overview of the cellular therapy standards and quality management requirements, and a discussion of the challenges of accreditation.
