ABSTRACT

The gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a public health problem, the complex physiology of the gastroesophageal junction and the alteration of its different components provokes a variety of symptoms that must be considered at the moment of the diagnosis. Today the surgical therapy for GERD implies a partial or total fundoplication that recovers the cardia dynamics and stops the acid reflux from the gastric cavity to the esophageal mucosa. The endoscopy has a major role in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with GERD; due to this it has been used intraoperative to identify technique flaws that could produce a failure in the procedure in short-term, whether the incapacity to avoid reflux or to induce postoperative dysphagia. Yet there are still missing long-term studies to ensure the proper elaboration of the fundoplication, though with the available literature we can conclude that the transoperative endoscopy is the best method to assess the repair of gastroesophageal junction.
