Comparison of three methods of sperm capacitation for ICSI in patients with abnormal morphology

ABSTRACT

Background: The election of the ideal method of sperm capacitation in assisted reproduction techniques (ART) is still controversial. Even we have a wide variety of studies comparing these techniques, we still have a lack of evidence to make this decision.
Objective: To assess three different techniques to sperm capacitation in assisted reproduction procedures.
Material and method: Three different sperm capacitation techniques were assessed in assisted reproduction techniques (Swim-up, Isolate and Cook gradients), in patients with sperm samples presenting altered morphology and normal motility and concentration. The variables evaluated included sperm recovery, fertilization, segmentation and pregnancy rates.
Results: The group included in Swim-up technique presented a diminished normal morphology percentage, but without statistical significance. There were not significant statistic differences in fertilization, segmentation nor pregnancy rates, but we observed a trend towards better pregnancy rates using this technique.
Conclusions: With samples of normal concentration and motility, and altered morphology, Swim-up technique may be the best option, because it shows a trend towards better rates of pregnancy, although without statistical significance.
