ABSTRACT

We reviewed several editions in Arabic and Persian of second volume of Al-Qanun, focusing on the chapters about the pathology of the tongue and its treatment, and trying to relate the concepts involved with the current knowledge. Al-Qanun of Avicenna demonstrates the advanced level of knowledge about the pathology and treatment of the tongue, as they were perceived since more than a thousand years; nowadays, many of those concepts are applied. The pathology of the tongue is a clear example of the importance of Islamic Medicine and the contribution of Muslim physicians to the evolution of Otolaryngology. The scientific contributions of the great masters, like Avicenna, in this field should not be ignored.
